How can his statements or writing, or his speaking the text by whomever wrote it, if he apparently said it, and approved the text in 2021, be justifications? Justification is after the fact of action. Ignorance wasn’t bliss back in 2014 and definitely not today. Putin’s comments from July of 2021 sure didn’t sound like nostalgia then, nor now. There was a need for the ”anti-Russia“ concept which we will never accept.” So, what’s really significant right now is that little quote from one of the links in your article. Inevitably, there came a time when the concept of ”Ukraine is not Russia“ was no longer an option. “De facto Western countries rejected Russia's repeated calls for dialogue." “Step by step, Ukraine was dragged into a dangerous geopolitical game aimed at turning Ukraine into a barrier between Europe and Russia, a springboard against Russia. Failure to understand this needs more attention than diagnosing Vladimir Putin. The ideas of our elite are riddled with fashionable rejections of science and logic like that. it could have been planned differently, every possible set of numbers were incorrect because the technology doesn't exist to allow such a plan to work in the near future. Not the particular numbers were incorrect, ie. If you want to understand the causes of the Ukraine conflict it would be good to recognize that the German Energiewende was a retreat from science and logic - not because the environment isn't important but because the numbers were incorrect and we pretended it would work regardless. If we want to understand why Putin rejects our culture it is as important for us to look at our obvious failures as Russian history. The same modern, enlightened West declared investing in defense or fossil fuels to be unethical and doesn't understand why investment in defense and fossil fuels decreased. ![]() The same modern, enlightened West believes that biological sex is a social construct and a homophobic delusion. The author needs to remember that the modern, enlightened West are also the folks that thought that Germany could close down its nuclear reactors and without an increase in its reliance on fossil fuels. I have a problem with articles like this. Putin is neither acting like an expert chess player, calculating every move, nor like a ruler unhinged by power or steroids. Personality-based explanations for Putin’s actions are the easiest to advance – and the most facile. In this world, war remains a permanent part of human experience lethal struggles over territory and resources can erupt at any time human beings kill and die for the sake of mystical visions.” That is why Western commentators and liberal Russians are baffled by Putin’s so-called “ special military operation” in Ukraine. ![]() ![]() The philosopher John Gray recently wrote that Russian President Vladimir Putin “is the face of a world the contemporary Western mind does not comprehend. The “riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma,” as Winston Churchill described Russia more than a century later, is no closer to being solved today. Placed, as it were, outside of the times,” he wrote, “we have not been affected by the universal education of mankind.” LONDON – The Russian writer Pyotr Chaadayev said of his country that “we have never advanced along with other people we are not related to any of the great human families we belong neither to the West nor to the East, and we possess the traditions of neither.
